There is no cure for multiple sclerosis. The goals of MS treatment are to slow the progression of the disease, relieve symptoms, and minimize the effects of acute attacks. Doctors may prescribe corticosteroids for short periods of time to help reduce the severity of relapses and a variety of other medications to address a specific patient’s symptoms.

MS does not significantly decrease the lifespan of those who have it, but it can frequently and intermittently affect their quality of life. People with MS usually work with a team of professionals who help support and monitor their condition and address their changing needs.
Available treatments continue to evolve. There is much ongoing MS research that is targeted at better understanding the cause(s) of MS, at slowing and modifying the progression of the disease, and at relieving its associated symptoms and complications.
